The grate, the hanging arms and the pan arm all move up and down the main post, so you set how close each one sits to the fire by hand.
The grill stands on a single leg that can be driven into the ground. The leg comes in two parts and locks together. The steel of the leg is 10mm thick, which is what lets it carry cast iron pots, pans and anything else heavy enough for a campfire.
There is no paint on this grill. The black comes from blackening the steel, so your equipment does not change colour in the fire and there is nothing on it to burn off.
Before the first use, hold it in the fire long enough to burn off any residue. Wiping it with a dry cloth after each use and keeping it somewhere dry is what keeps rust away.
The entire grill arm that touches food is always made from 304 stainless steel, whichever material you choose. The body and frame are blackened carbon steel or 304 stainless steel, according to your choice.
When the carbon steel body is chosen, the grill arm is bright metal and the body is black, so the set looks two toned at first. From the first fire the 304 surface darkens with soot and over time it blackens like the rest of the set. This is a natural process, not a fault.
